Muncie Murals

OVERVIEW For this project we were required to create work that sought new cultural and social solutions that would generate empathy, create dialogue, foster new ideas and relationships, and offer a powerful and democratic way of expressing, sharing and shaping values. We picked a topic that combined our acquired knowledge, personal interests, and passion for a topic within the field of graphic design.
RESEARCH Murals have been around since the beginning of time, starting with cave paintings in the Paleolithic Era, to the frescos of the Middle Ages, to Diego Rivera and the Mexican Muralism Art Movement. Murals were used as a way of recording history, a way of promotion, a way of establishing social hierarchy, and above all communication. In present day, murals have evolved into so much more for a community. Clark County Mural Society shares, “Murals have become a unique and appealing way of increasing tourism and improving commerce.” Murals bring people together, revitalize reputations, improve the economy, and increase foot traffic making streets safer. Murals are a destination, a history lesson, an Instagram location, and a pop of color on a street of gray.
PROBLEM Muncie was once a bustling suburban community for those families striving for the “American Dream”, held together by factory jobs, and known as a “working class community”. Since the 1970’s, Muncie’s population has significantly declined due to de-industrialization and the closing of factories. Factories were abandoned, many lost their jobs, and Muncie lost it's livelihood.

Today, Muncie is mainly known as a “college town”, home of Ball State University. After living here for almost four years, I have explored Muncie and all it has to offer. The remaining businesses are mainly locally owned and independent, giving them a personal feel and great quality. Muncie is more than just a college town or a city that “once was” but an artistic, beautiful community filled with hidden gems and genuine people.
SOLUTION Muncie Murals curates six murals to be painted by local and international muralists throughout Downtown Muncie. Following the painting of these murals will be a three day festival packed with events. Each event will be concentrated around a locally owned, independent Muncie business. The goal of each mural is to bring attention to local businesses, grow tourism, increase safety, and revitalize the streets of Muncie. The goal of the festival is to give people a reason to come to Muncie, but the events highlighting all that Muncie has to offer, is what will make them want to stay and return.
